Kona and Lava Photos

This past week we spent a couple days in Kona and then an evening at the lava viewing area near Kalapana. See this gallery for photos from both locations. A very brief time lapse of the lava is posted here.

Kona Brewers Festival

Saturday was the annual Kona Brewers Festival which Amanda and I have made it to each of the last three years. It’s a lot of fun. This time around I set up a time lapse of the entire event from above (a balcony on the 6th floor of the King Kamehameha Hotel) with the help of Callie McNew who also shot some video o the event.

I’ve been doing several time lapses recently and this is another. Taken yesterday at the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station it shows the nightly observing program from sunset until closing. Click on the image above to get to the movie.

Nightfall Over Kilauea

I decided to make a run out to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park this evening to try some night photography. It was a beautifully clear night and I managed some stills and a nice time lapse of the vog spouting from Halema’uma’u in Kilauea caldera. Click here to see the time lapse movie.

Lightning Storm from Mauna Kea

Last night Charles and I tried to do some observing from the “power station” on Mauna Kea. We were in and out of the clouds until it got fully dark, then in cleared up briefly and we got some observing in. After a little while some thin clouds started drifting over and around 8:40 or so, we started seeing flashes off to the East over Hilo. We eventually realized that there was a thundercloud low on the horizon which we couldn’t see, but was producing some nice lightning. We stopped observing and were treated to a spectacular light show. I set up the camera to take photos, hoping to catch a few lightning bolts, but the sequence made a pretty nice time lapse of the clouds moving south across Hilo. After the storm died out, the thin clouds eventually moved on as well and we got some more observing in before heading down around midnight.
