Two More Astrophotos

I haven’t been doing a lot of astrophotography lately, but I have managed to get out twice in the last few months. The first image, on the left above, is of the Barnard 171 dark cloud complex in Cepheus. I took this image with the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station’s imaging telescope which I put together for them a few years ago.

The second image is of M77 and NGC 1055, a pair of nicely contrasting galaxies. One is face on (M77) and one is edge on with a nice dust lane cutting through it (NGC 1055). This image was taken with my own gear. In this case, a Stellarvue SV90TBV refractor. Both images could use some additional exposure time, but are good enough for now.

Photographing Mauna Kea

I recently had the chance to do some time lapse photography on and around Mauna Kea with an NBC film crew who were shooting a pilot for a new series starring photographer Peter Lik. You can read more about the show here.

We spent a day in the saddle and on the summit, culminating with some night photography before moonrise. The photo above was taken just as the moon rose. Its orange glow is illuminating the Gemini North Telescope while the summer Milky Way is visible behind.

I also shot several time lapse sequences on this trip. I’ve assembled a few of those in to a movie.

Kona and Lava Photos

This past week we spent a couple days in Kona and then an evening at the lava viewing area near Kalapana. See this gallery for photos from both locations. A very brief time lapse of the lava is posted here.

Kona Brewers Festival

Saturday was the annual Kona Brewers Festival which Amanda and I have made it to each of the last three years. It’s a lot of fun. This time around I set up a time lapse of the entire event from above (a balcony on the 6th floor of the King Kamehameha Hotel) with the help of Callie McNew who also shot some video o the event.
