Discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783, NGC 253 is one of the brightest members of the Sculptor group of galaxies. NGC 253 is actually a barred spiral seen nearly edge on. Its bar is visible in the near infrared as can be seen in the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) image.
